The pace is relaxed and unhurriedand it is a delight to stroll by old whitewashed merchant houses, with their shuttered windows and timbered balconies full of flowers. There are more than 25 historical sites near Kalkan and only less than two hours drive for those who love to explore around. Around KalkanKaputaş, about 7km east of Kalkan and just over 20km west of Kaş is a striking mountain gorge crossed by a small highway bridge and below that is a perfect sandy cove and beach accessible by long stairs. A short distance east of Kaputaş , Mavi Mağara (Blue Cave) lurks beneath the highway, marked by a sign. Patara beach is one of the most beautyful in all Southern Turkey and stretches for some 17km of the finest cream coloured sand which melts into the clear blue sae making sunbathing a pleasure. The whole area of Patara is full of history, where St Nicholas (Santa Claus) spent his youth back in the 4th century, and other claims to fame are abundant. Patara was the largest seaport of the ancient civilisation, visited by St Luke and St Paul, and a major center in Roman times. The remains of the amphitheatre, a spectacular arch built in 100 AD and an acropolis affording magnificent hilltop views of Patara beach are still to be seen today.
